Doesn't have time for new customers, if you need work done, don't go here, will only turn you away and RUDE !! , I don't understand why people are this way not a good experience at all...I ONLY DO REVIEWS HONESTLY AND SO OTHERS CAN BE INFORMED... ( I had heard this was a great place to go, but I guess it's only for certain people that John picks to help ) VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH JOHN WEST AUTO, JUST BEING HONEST ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE HERE ....NOT GOOD !!!

I left this place feeling completely disrespected. I was recommended to John by a family member. The way this guy spoke to me was totally unacceptable. I went in for an inspection and he didn t like that I was going to pay with a card. Said it wasn t even worth it for him with the fees he had to pay for card use. (Cost of doing business) I then tried to pay him in cash. He refused my money. Said something along the lines of the state won t let us charge like you landscapers do. (I own a landscape company) he then nearly shoulder brushed me on his way by and went back to his shop.Stunned I looked at the receptionist and she said he just got back from the doctor that afternoon and got some really bad news. She was profusely apologizing to me for her bosses behavior. Before I could tell her it wasn t her fault John came back through the window that connects his shop and office. He continued to scream at me and his receptionist not to take my money and for me to get out. That s he s not broke and doesn t need my money. I did nothing to him to deserve this type of treatment. Judging by some of these other reviews I m not alone in this type of experience at this business. I will never go back here and I will tell anyone willing to listen not to go here.

He s not taking any new customers for a year. At least that is what I was informed when I called to make an appointment. He may be a good mechanic (I don t know) however his customer service skills are lacking. He should post no new customers on his website and quit wasting people s time.

"We're way behind..." click. Supposedly the guy knows his stuff, just not how to talk to people. I've heard great things about Johnny's skills, and I'd love to put him to use, but he's about as rude as they come. Good riddance.

Extremely rude and unprofessional over the phone. Discussed getting simple machine work done and was immediately cut off mid sentence and told that he only worked on Chevy and Ford. Nevermind the fact that I was talking about a big block Chevrolet .. will never be taking any machine work to him in the future and will never recommend to anybody. Don t even bother calling this guy, absolute tool.

John is the true expert professional. Just Completed some general maintenance and carburetor repair on my classic restored 1970 Mustang Mach 1. Searched all over several counties to find a high caliber shop that I could trust with my investment with this car. THIS IS THE PLACE for work on your classic cars. John s knowledge, commitment to quality and care is the best. Incredible Experience!I own a '72 Vette that needed some love when I purchased it last Spring. It made the rounds through several shops and although everyone serviced our needs, we really needed to find a reliable shop that had a passion for old cars. John and his team are awesome! The shop is as clean as an operating room which demonstrates his perfectionist style. He knows more about my car than anyone that we have had working on it. His shop is set up to work on the car quickly and efficiently. His prices and the quality of his work are remarkable. I cannot find enough words to project how much he has exceeded my expectations. Thank you John!

This is the best auto repair shop I have ever been too. The shop is very clean and the staff and mechanics are professional. It was nice to have my car looked over without a long list of fixes. John West noted all the issues and conveyed to me which ones were necessary and which issues were minimal. They considered the age and high mileage of my car with the replacements needed and made their cost effect assessment on what was worth repairing. On top of their excellent and trustworthy service, their repairs are always done in a timely manner and their rates are quite reasonable.Unlike the last reviewer I have always been able to schedule an appointment next day. Best of all, they are open until 6pm so I can pick my car up after I get off work. These guys are the best in Raleigh!

There is not a better shop I have found in NC. Honesty, quality, diagnosis, you pay for what your vehicle needs, no hunting and pecking. Professional, you want to send your wife somewhere that she feels confident she was treated with respect and didn't pay for things she didn't need, this is the place. Check out a used car here before you buy, this is the place. OLD SCHOOL, if you don't know what that means you will be educated on that here. If I could give him 1000 stars I would! Mr. West has been my family's mechanic for over 30 years. I'd take my car to no other place! He's very frank and honest. He's not trying to swindle anyone out of their money and he's very professional. I appreciate his directness and hope everyone that comes in contact with him appreciates such an honest mechanic. They are definitely few and far between. I stay almost 2 hours away and come all of the way back home just to have my car serviced. If that doesn't sum it up,I don't know what will! John West Auto

I called to see if I could have an engine I built dyno tested before I put it in my car. The first time I called, I spoke to woman who was very nice and said it would be about $400. When I called to schedule a date and time I spoke to a man, possibly the owner? He said he was booked with other engines for several months, I said that was fine and asked to be added to the list. We continued to discuss preparation details and pricing during which, several times he made it clear I would need to sign a waiver in case I broke his machine and would need to purchase a new one. I thought that was odd, but understandable. At the end of the interaction when he realized that this was an engine built by me and already had miles on it, he told me "it was not worth his time". If this is the kind of interaction to be expected, I would recommend taking your business elsewhere, as I will.

The bottom line is John is the only man in Raleigh that we trust to fix our cars correctly and not get ripped off. I have never had John or anyone on the staff be anything but Courteous, helpful and straight forward with us and we have been going here for 8 years.

Needed a car for my son, and we were looking at a Celica. Took it to John West, first and foremost for his reputation, but also since he used to work for Toyota. He got in the car, pushed the accelerator to the floor, heard the engine knock, and said, "I'm surprised you got this car here". It was a beautiful show car, but wasn't so beautiful under the hood apparently. "Whatever you do, do NOT buy this car, and take it back right now". Needless to say, we didn't buy the vehicle. Took back to the owner and told him he said, oh, yeah, I forgot to tell you it needed some engine work...so, in short, John was able to tell me what was wrong with the vehicle by pushing the accelerator? Seriously knows his stuff....Look at the website, and you'll see some photos of the garage. I'm not kidding, the floor of the garage is cleaner than my house! It's amazing, frankly.Great to find a mechanic you can trust. Once you find them, hold onto them...John West is that guy

We've been coming to John West since 1976 (before I was born) and there is truly nowhere else to take your car. Excellent service, excellent staff, and you could literally eat off the floor... even with the chow-chow that hangs out all day, it's spotless! There are a few people I feel like America can't stand to lose: RBG, Betty White, and John West.

John West has been working on my family s cars for over 30 years. You can trust the job will be done right every time. He always tells you the work that has to be done vs what could be done depending on how long you plan on keeping your car. If you want an excellent, honest mechanic, John, his son David and the rest of the team are the ones you should trust to work on your vehicles.

Had my 2004 Ford Explorer Serviced here at the recommendation of a colleague at work. I started to have a loud howling noise from my front end which I first though was worn tires. After replacing the tires the sound did not go away. After setting up an appointment, Dropped the truck off at 8am and got a call back around noon indicating what the cause and price to repair would be.It is sometimes hard to find a trustworthy mechanic. Instead of repairing the left and right wheel bearings John was forthcoming enough to let me know that only one side was giving me a problem. Excellent Prices, Quality work, trustworthy!Oh and i'm black! They treated me just fine, don't listen to the silliness below.

Reading some of the recent comments, that is why we live in America and everyone has the right to their own opinion and interpretation of how they should be treated. One thing I have learned from 20 years of serving this country, is that their is always two sides to a story. I have had nothing but great maintenance experiences with Mr. West who has always treated me with respect and the work is impeccable, with attention to detail. All of my vehicles were scheduled to include my wife's 1967 Camaro, 05 Suburban, and 05 Mazda 6. I read so many reviews of other maintenance shops before reading all the outstanding reviews of John West Auto when it came to Classic Cars. This is why I chose Mr. West with my late father-in-law's Camaro. Mr. West assured me he was the only person who will be operating the car, but even more comforting was seeing his racing and personal experience with the exact car I dropped off. The maintenance which was required, Mr. West gave me 3 different options and it was my choice on which one I preferred. I have been 100% satisfied with John West Auto.

Its been quite a few years since I visited John's shop. I don't think there was even the concept of a web review back then! I'm hoping he will do a pre-purchases checkout for me tomorrow(fingers crossed) so I stumbled on these reviews. I can't tell you how happy I was to read the review written by the one person that did not give him give stars.I don't know if that's a perfect reproduction of what happened, but I do know that as honest and fair as John is...if I were him I would have probably gotten a bit tired of dealing with that gentleman also. I've "fired" prospects(and clients) in my business before because I get that they don't get "me".I trust John implicitly and apparently everyone lucky enough to do business with him does as well.My first contact with him came many years ago when the Toyota dealer gave me an estimate of over $2k for some needed repair. I sought out John(I got lucky with the yellow pages or internet or whatever) and he confirmed that the repair was needed but understood my need to spend as little as required and found aftermarket parts and did the same job for less than $1ki! I've probably had him do work for me four or five times and have always been treated impeccably and charged a fair price. I assume that John does quite well as a result of being good at what he does; he certainly deserves to be making a very good living given the way he treats every customer.David from Genesis Billing(so you know I am "real")

I was lucky enough to visit this place a couple of years ago. Since then my car (a honda CRV) has needed a few repairs, some major, some minor. Each repair and service was completed with expert care and excellent service.I had to have my catalytic converter replaced, my check engine light kept going on in my car and John West thought it was the converter but he wanted to make sure. So he installed the new converter, stored my old one and said for me to drive around my car for a week to see if the light came back on again. If the light came back on, then he would replace my old converter and we would continue looking for the problem. He did not expect any payment until the problem had been solved so without paying for the new part or the labor or anything I drove around for a week and it turns out he was right about the converter.I also had to replace the compressor on my car about a year later due to problems with the A/C (my car is a 2002 and it seemed that it's time for repairs was upon me) John put in a new part but a couple weeks later there were some problems with it. I took it back and turns out the new compressor part had been faulty. Without fuss he replaced the part with a new one and I was soon out the door without paying a cent more for anything.I once took my car to a Meineke to have the oil changed. They came out after 20 mins with a 8 item list of things that were in "dire need" for me to have fixed. They said they could fix about 1/2 of the items right now to the tune of 800$ but that my car was unsafe and I needed to have them fixed right away. I took this list to John and he did a thorough check of the car and found only one thing that needed to be replaced which was my spark plugs. The Meineke had told me that my brake pads were done to only 5% but John found that they were at 50%. This was how I knew I could trust this business, I honestly don't know anything about cars and they had the opportunity to taken advantage of that but they have proved themselves time and again to be totally upfront and honest about every step of a repair or any service that is needed.At this auto shop the staff is very friendly, the garage is impeccably clean and service is unmatched. I felt like I was treated like a family member rather than just another customer. As long as I live in Raleigh I will never take my car anywhere else.

His customer communication consists of constant intimidation ( trying to pick a fight with a customer when confronted about a particular repair cost and time) and reliance on only one source for book times for repairs. He leverages unknowldgable customers for his good reviews and then try s to charge 1,500 for a U joint replacement. Sounds residuals especially if a man and his wife can replace them in their car port for 50 bucks worth of parts and 3-5 hours of labor.

First time calling to get information if he can fix my transmission in one truck , and then to upgrade my other transmission. Guy by the name of John caught a nasty attitude, so people please be careful about this place.

I bring my 2008 corvette here. He is very honest and Helpful. Also, If you have aftermarket parts he's one person you can trust not to steal parts off your car!!!!

After making a 7:30 AM appointment they told me because my registration did not match this county he refused to get it inspected, being that I ve had my car for over 5 years and never got it inspected in that county that is ridiculous, and a waste of my time. How do you qualify for vehicle inspections but don t know NC laws on inspection!

Awesome guy who knows his stuff! Did a cam swap and other small details I won t get into, but did it quickly and at a fair price. Won t find another person around as good as John.
