Prior to going to Clayton Lube & Tune I had brought my vehicle to a dealership for what seemed to be a battery issue. I was charged top dollar and the battery died within two days. The dealer did not run a diagnostic check. I then had my car towed to Clayton Lube & Tube. They did a full diagnostic on my car, had perfect and quick communication and fixed my car within hours. They found the battery that I was sold from the dealer may have been old... I experienced Clayton Lube & Tune to be completely honest and fair with pricing. Perfect communication, reliability, expertise and fair pricing... all what you want from a mechanic.

*my car is pretty old, 21, so things will go wrong with it, I know* Long post. This last time going was my last time. I d been before, a few times. Spent a lot of money a couple of those times because they d found something that was wrong. Found . Most recently, I d gone in November. I forget the reason. But I needed a new compressor, which I knew because I d needed one for years. But now, apparently, the broken compressor was affecting other parts. So they put in the compressor. I had cold air for two minutes. I called and the man who answered said who knows what the problem is, they d have to look. It was November so I figured I d wait. Fast forward to now, April. It s getting warm out, so I want to figure out and fix the problem so I could have a/c. The compressor is four months in, so still under warranty. But I m told if the problem is with something else and not the compressor, then I d have to pay. Sure. I take the car Monday, they call the next day. It s probably a freon leak, so we re going to have to charge it and run the dye through it to find it. $219, thereabouts. Okay. They call back. It s not a leak, but we re pretty sure there s a loose wire somewhere. We ll have to find the wire and fix it. Maybe it takes an hour, maybe not. $168, IF it takes an hour. Okaaaay. I don t hear back that day. Wednesday, they call. It s not a wire, it s the fuse box. You need a new one. WHAT. $300, but oh, they can get a discount and it ll be $280. Now, I m quoted a total of over $700, and the first two things they re sure it was, it WASN T? I almost cursed. I told them don t touch anything else. I m picking my car up. My mom takes the car to her mechanic. The fuse box is fine. They said it s either a leak or the a/c actuator. So I m now trying to figure out what the issue is here with Clayton Lube & Tune. Is it something malicious and they re scamming me because I m a woman and I m Black or both? Or is it neither and not a scam at all, and they just don t know what they re doing?? Which is it?? I originally chose this place because of the good rating on Google and the fact that they have free diagnostics. But at this point, it s not worth it.

I had a great experience here, even though it was a pricey job that had to be done. I still think it's cheaper than alot of places around. And the guys were up front and honest about the pricing, and even offered payment plan options. And had my truck fixed and ready to be picked up the next day. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a good mechanic shop

Excellent communication and quick work of a difficult job - timing and gasket. The technician was thorough and quality work done. Technology used to relay quotes and findings with ability to approve or decline work with clear line by line work tasks denoted. They have set the bar for automotive care high - would give 10 stars if I could!

I recently went here. I needed new brake pads, and rotars installed on my rear car.I normally do my own brakes and rotars. I wanted to try it. I don't even know if they actually bought a new rotar or just found 1 laying around and put it on..I would check your car for any rust. It should be new.:Update: I got my brakes and rotars rear done on my vehicle. I went in and had them warranty the "New" brakes and rotars again. I found out they actually store the rotars and brake pads in storage but order them 9 months ahead. So it sits in the storage for awhile.I'm abit sketched out because of what they did to me the first time. They say, they put on new brakes before but the ones they put on now is totally different than the other rotar I had on. But all in all I'm glad they fixed it.I'm pleased that Phil took the time to talk with me and let me get warranty on the new brakes and rotars. I'm not sure I'll be getting my brakes and rotars here after the experience I had but, Thank you giving me a new rotar and brake pads.

Went here due to a leak coming from the engine. They were able to diagnose and fix the leak, which was a broken water pump. Because that is a difficult part to reach in a ford explorer, the repair was a bit costly. A good portion came from the parts needed, labor cost wasn't to bad.Got the vehicle back a week later and noticed it was still leaking, took it back immediately, at no cost they replaced the faulty gasket and had the vehicle back to me within 24hrs.I do recommend them for major repairs. Anything easy like brakes and rotors, go down the street, it will cheaper and they will have it done in less than 30 minutes.

Great service. My 2011 f150 had a few oil leaks and they were able to take care of them promptly. They called and updated me throughout the service and their time estimate (1 day) was correct. Fair pricing, too.

Clayton Lube & Tune is located on Hwy 70 leaving Clayton toward Smithfield. They take Oil Change by appointment and provide a multi-point inspection. They usually have coupon to help with cost associated with oil change on their website or via mail circular.

I actually bought a car from the owner. He said that they had replaced the engine. A month later, the engine broke down because there was no oil in the oil pan. If the engine was replaced, how could it be out of oil in a month. I have never heard of an engine burning 4 quarts of oil in a month. Needless to say, I wouldn't take a car there for an oil change or any maintenance. My son, who took his vehicle there, had tires put on his car. The mechanic put new locking lugs on the wheels and never gave my son the adapter to remove them. My son stopped taking his car there because he discovered their intentional mistake when he tried to do his own brakes. If you don't have a locking lug remover, you have to take back to the ones that put them on. Very shady business. I have even heard that the mechanics he hired forget to put the oil plug in. Don't use this business. Especially when he can't keep two shops running and has to reduce to one.

My car engine was overheating while I was visiting a family member in town. I am a DIYer, but because I was nowhere near my tools I could not make a conclusion as to what was causing this overheating problem. I did what I could, but needed a definitive answer. So I found the nearest auto shop, Clayton Lube and Tune, to diagnose my engine. They said I need a new engine because the head gasket(s) failed and potentially cracked or badly warped the block/heads. I asked them to give me exactly what they did in writing and then I had the car towed to my relative's house.Upon receiving the car I noticed a coolant stain down front end, the Subaru emblem clouded, and the grill with "wipe-up" marks which gave it away that the job was done carelessly and quick. I checked the coolant and noticed it was lower than when I gave them the car. When I called them to ask what exactly they did to test the car engine (they gave me a receipt that said "Level 1 Diagnostic Testing" but no information as to what they actually did which I asked them to do before paying them for their service), it was as though I had to press the receptionist for information and the more I brought up about their diagnoses the more information about their testing process came out. They said they would call me back to discuss this more, but never did. It has been two weeks.I realize people come here to drop their car off and have done what should be done and they seem like they are good for that. However, if anyone out their is ever in a situation like mine I would not recommend this place. They are nice people, but not the most straight forward.Service: Auto engine diagnostic

Over priced and car broke down as soon as I got home. They did however send their own tow truck person so that I didn t have to pay for the tow back to their shop.

Stay clear. Paid to have my tire patched twice (same tire) because they did not patch it either time. Went to a different tire company after lube and tube, damaged my tire with six holes in it now buying a new tireFailed my inspection for legal factory tentWent somewhere else and passed no problemWorst mechanics ever, and I m certain they deliberately punctured six holes in my tire

Great customer service and follow-up to see if I was satisfied with the work they have done. They did not try to gauge me with pricing. Priced fair for the work they did.

Great shop saved our family road tripThe story goes, me and the family had road trip planned and had about 17 hours in the car ahead of us. So, like a good car owner I wanted to make sure my 2012 Honda CR-V would not break down in the middle of the drive.I took it into a "Franchise that shall not be named" and asked for an oil change, an inspection, and our "free alignment". Sure enough inspection showed no problems. "That sound you hear?" "Don't worry about it." "The grinding noise?" "We didn't hear it and the breaks look fine to me."3 hours into our drive the breaks feel a little bumpy. Over the next 5 hours this gets gradually worse. Luckily we make it to our destination without any major issue.Even luckier, Clayton Lube and Tune was down the street. I called them first thing in the morning, told them I was from out of town, and they got me in that morning. Communication was great, I love they do there communication via call AND text outlining everything in writing. They found warped rotors (missed on [FRANCHISE REDACTED] inspection) on the front of the car and had them fixed by the time I had finished brunch.Nothing but smooth driving the 8 hours home.(They also fixed the AC I had overcharged :P)Services: Auto A/C recharge, Auto brake repair, Brakes, Air conditioning, Brake service & repair

We're from PA and were visiting family in Clayton when a serious sounding noise started in our 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan. We stopped into Clayton Lube & Tune on a Friday and they were totally booked, but the very friendly person at the counter said it sounded like our problem could be wheel bearings. We left, thought over trying to get the vehicle home and decided that was too dangerous, so returned. We were delighted that, despite the fact that we would be unlikely to give them further business, being we lived in PA, so they had nothing to gain, they fit us in on Monday, completed replacement of the two front wheel bearings and housings (which did turn out to be the problem) in one day, gave us a full diagnostic report on the van, stayed in touch via text and an itemized estimate, and we drove home the next day, ten hours, with not a single problem. To say we were grateful is an understatement. We cannot recommend them highly enough, and were we permanent residents, they would most certainly be our mechanics and we would trust not only their skill, but their integrity.Service: Steering & suspension repair

This business is a gem! Honest and superior customer service!I recently bought my car in to have a front-end alignment. They said the alignment was ok.They could ve said that there were issues that have to be addressed, and incurring a major monetary expense. But that wasn t the case.Because of this experience, I am now a loyal customer!

Long story short they are opportunists and looking for any way to take your money. They take advantage of ignorance and are not eager to help customers, even when the customer is asking questions and trying to find more affordable solutions. They are price gougers. My father took my car in for an oil change and left paying $90+ extra for a SIMPLE replacement of a cabin air filter and an engine air filter. Which we learned takes about 2 minutes to replace and parts total about $12 maximum. Needless to say, we will drive further to take our cars to our preferred mechanic that doesn t charge an arm and a leg for 2 minutes of labor. Lesson learned. I blame myself for trusting them. Great price for the oil change but they are feeding off of recommended repairs. Beware and don t be afraid to do your own research.

Update:It's a little late for the update but I'll add it anyway and explain why I lowered my rating for this business from 5 stars to 2 stars.I had an oil change in July, 2021. They didn't fasten all the screws of the splash shield underneath the engine. Also, my Kia Sorento's drain plug doesn't require you to take off the splash shield. It was hanging and touching the surface. So a few days later, I came and asked them about it and they "fixed" it very quickly. The fix? They completely took off the shield and told me all screws were tightened. I believed them and only found out about it when I started changing oil myself. I'd not mind for the first mistake (not tightening all screws) but I definitely find it dishonest and immoral to throw off the shield altogether and lying about it. I trusted them 100% but now I know all mom and pop shops are not worth your trust. To buy that shield, I've to spend $118.43 plus taxes on eBay!Old review:Appreciate these gentlemen's honest and hard work. My first time there was to change oil. Price was awesome and also suggested I should change the air filter. I already knew my air filter needed replacement. The other day, went with a problem with my driver door sensor not detecting door closures. The mechanic (sorry forgot his name now) inspected the problem and recommended I contact my car company first as that should still be under warranty. And I did contact my car company and it was under warranty. You earned my respect guys. Will come back every time. Thank you.

I was pleased with the oil change and tire rotation. When told that my wheels were bent 2 of them I had them replaced and was told my car would run smooth. Well after almost 3 hours waiting even tho I had an appointment I was told that one of the used wheels was "slightly" bent. So my car runs but not much of an improvement to be honest. I do understand that they were used but still why put on another bent well. I really got no answer and would be charged for another wheel. They got 2 stars because I was pleased with the oil change, filters and diagnostic but $400 later I would expect something to run better. Anyway they reached out and I ask them about finding out what a new wheel would cost. They said they would find out. I'm still waiting for a reply and I did text them still told they would get back in touch with me. Still waiting.....

Called to make a DMV inspection appointment on a holiday. Wasn't expecting anyone to answer, but a nice lady answered and gave me an appointment for a few days later. Dropped the car off the morning of the appointment with no issues. Received a call later that afternoon telling me the vehicle failed the inspection and that we needed over $1k worth of work done. Wasn't expecting that and told them I'd come pick up the vehicle. Paid the inspection fee and went home. Later, I looked at the inspection sheet and discovered that the only reason the vehicle failed was due to the tint on the windows. It felt like this business was disingenuous at best; but more like outright dishonest and trying to get as much money out of me as possible. We removed the tint ourselves and took it to another inspection facility down the road where we passed with zero issues.

I won a civil judgment against this company in January and they have still failed to pay for the damages done. Today I went to courthouse and filed more paperwork with the sheriffs office and had to spend more money because this business fails to do the right thing and pay their obligations. Buyer beware!Purchased 1000 dollars in tires they caused a 1000 dollars in damages. All parties had agreed the damage was done the day of service. Repeatedly given the run around about speaking to a manager. Then asked to bring my vehicle back so they could look at it once more. I advised not to touch and attempt to make any repairs until they speak with me. Completely ignored my request and made more damage by attempting to repair the damage against my request. After weeks of trying to speak with the owner was finally called and told I don't believe you anything you and my wife have to say and told us never to come back to his property. Because we disrespected his wife. All this because we were upset after weeks of ignored calls etc.Lucky for us we had video and audio of every encounter they lied and stated I used profanity etc. Well video and audio provided different details to include we had to get a police report, we then took them to small claims court and WON but guess what he still has not paid the claim he lost. I believe in helping the local business but not at my expense. I will never tell anyone not to use a business but I will tell you my story. The staff was just simply rude and only became rude once they owed me for damages they caused. This is the first time in my life I have had to sue a business. I will be returning to court and putting a Lien on the business if necessary. I hope this review helps someone make a wise decision. I could say more about our treatment but I don't want to make this personal.

I took my vehicle in because the check engine light, hill assist light, traction control light, and another light were on. Also, the brakes were coming across with a low fluid warning. The shop was able to get me in same day. After checking over the car, the codes were cleared, and I was sent an estimate straight to my phone where I could accept or decline the services. The shop called me and explained each line item as well as the symptoms I would be noticing with the car and why the work was recommended. After discussing the recommended services with the shop, I accepted and declined from the list of recommended services from the convenience of my cell phone. My only concern during this process was some of the things recommended had been done fairly recently. I explained to the tech that I felt confident those repairs were NOT needed. He explained that they were added because of the mileage on my vehicle and the shop s lack of access to previous records. The work was completed the next day. The car is running better than it has run in years. We got new ball bearings and some adjustments to our brakes. All the lights are off on the dashboard. Later that night, we heard a loud sound. It was kind of like a tuning fork. I took video of the sound and sent it to the shop. I received an immediate response and the shop was able to diagnose the car from the video. They fit the car in the same day, fixed the sound at no charge, and sent us back on our way. This is my first time using this shop. I am a woman with a basic understanding of cars and felt comfortable with the explanation of services recommended and provided. I have been in shops where I have been spoken down to and this was NOT the case at this establishment. The staff (there were three) that I spoke with were knowledgeable and explained things to me in a way that was appropriate, helpful, and in line with what I shared that I used my vehicle for. Overall, it was an awesome experience, and my car is running great. I plan to use them again, and I would recommend them to others.Services: Auto engine diagnostic, Brake service & repair

Above and beyond. I went in for an oil change and they found a leak in my Audi. I had work done about 1.5 years ago in New Mexico and the leak was a direct result of the shop in Albuquerque. Clayton Lube & Tune contacted the warranty company and the shop in Albuquerque to get the repair covered at no cost to me. I didn t even have to call Albuquerque. The guys got all the paperwork lined out, brought my car back in and fixed it in one day. I wouldn t have had a clue who to call or what to say! The shop is excellent, the guys are super nice and professional. Couldn t have asked for more honest service. I ll be a customer for as long as I m in NC. Not going to sugar coat this but sometimes it s intimidating as a female with no mechanical knowledge to go into a repair shop but these guys explained the issue and took care of it all. You do not find customer service like this often these days! A+++!!Services: General repairs, Oil change

Cheap oil changes and that s about it. Brought my car in for state inspection, they said it failed and had over $5k things wrong broken or leaking . Took it somewhere else that SAME day and it passed. I asked the owner of new place to check what they said failed and he said no way, lube and tune was full of it. I also started noticing each time I brought mine, my daughters and my husbands cars in there was ALWAYS something wrong with the cars and it would always cost well over $1k+. Stopped using them months ago. They just want your money and use make up issues with your vehicle it get it.Service: General repairs & maintenance

Made an appointment for an oil change/tire rotation for 7/14. Honored a coupon for $29.99 full synthetic oil change. Can't turn down that deal. In and out within 45 minutes. This was my 2nd visit (brake work 2021) and each time, everything went smoothly. Will continue to bring my vehicles here!
