Paid to have my transmission rebuilt and I didn't even get to drive a month before it started messing up and now no reverse. I was told I had to pay for the repair when it should have been under warranty from their rebuild

John runs a great shop! I ve gone to him for over a year and I still make the drive down from Asheville. He often goes the extra mile. Absolutely recommend them!

After a huge miscommunication, the owner worked with us and gave us a pretty good discount. He also fixed a bunch of things we didn t even know were wrong. I would recommend this place.

Took my truck to them for a complete fluid and filter change in my transmission.changed me 280 dollars. Took truck home and crawled under truck to check their work. Pan had not been removed from trans which is necessary to get to the filter. Also checked fluid in trans. Still had dirty fluid in it. Called owner and he denied it and rudely refused to refund .my 280 dollars claiming he had proof it has been done. Now I have to take it else where to get it doneBEWARE. BEWARE. Please don't waste your money on these low life crooks.

Had our transmission rebuilt on our Envoy XL a few years ago here at Black Bear. The first day after I picked it up I had to have it towed back to them because it messed up AGAIN after they "rebuilt" the transmission. They paid the tow fee and said that some hose disconnected and said they fixed it. All seemed well with it for a while but here we are right after the warranty expired with less than 20k on the rebuilt transmission and the transmission is going yet again. They also replaced a battery and charged us for it without even saying anything which was trivial at the time but now om seeing they have made a habit out of this. Take your money elsewhere for transmission service. It's not worth saving a few hundred initially only to have to have your transmission rebuilt yet again a few years later.Service: Transmission

DO NOT USE THESE SCAM ARTISTS! After almost a month of waiting, Spent $1000 on a new clutch from black bear, when the issue began with my vehicle I knew immediately it was not a clutch problem causing it to stop running (I told them this, but since I m not a mechanic I guess my opinion didn t matter). Of course when the truck had been repaired it was running but within a 20 minute drive the same issue appeared and the truck died. I called them only to be met with excuse after excuse, denial and eventually anger. The only thing this shop is Interested in is padding their pockets as quickly as possible. We have now had to place it in another shop for the actual repair. A shop actually willing to do the work to fix their customers vehicles instead of fixing what they want with the biggest price tag.Service: Transmission repair

I highly recommend Jon and Rob at Black Bear Transmission. My family and I were driving through Canton, NC when our engine was overheating near their closing time. The first 4 service stations we called wouldn t even look at our vehicle. Jon not only agreed to take a look at our car but got our family back on the road quickly with a simple fix. This place is not honest or helpful. I took my Chevy Cruz here to get a oil leak from my valve gasket fixed and replaced. The mechanic told me it was my turbo, I said that I need a second opinion and wanted to get my vehicle that day. They made me pay a diagnostic fee cuz they love to line their pockets with scamming customers money.Service: Engine repairService: Engine repair

I would definitely not recommend this mechanic. I dropped my car off to have it looked at and they called me and told me it was a $3400 repair on my CVT transmission. I decided to have a second opinion as that is a huge chunk of money. I told them I was having it towed to another mechanic, and when I arrived to pay the diagnostic fee, they told me they put in a new battery without even asking me first. The owner was incredibly unprofessional and rude and offered no other options with my car issue. As a mechanic, I feel you should offer multiple solutions when something is that expensive.

They said that they replaced my brakes and rotors but 6 months later, they needed replaced again. They also claimed that I needed new calipers but luckily I had a co-worker who was a retired mechanic. What a complete nightmare. Had vehicle towed there. Had work completed there 10 days earlier for over 800.00. Fuel pump needed replacing. When we called for a quote on repairs, John the owner said it would be 585.00 for the fuel pump plus labor. We were shocked and told him we didn't get paid until Wednesday. AT NO TIME was he given permission to begin work. John was on speaker on phone and we both heard the quote and he WAS NOT approved to begin work. After checking elsewhere, we decided to have the car towed elsewhere and order the part for $149.00 from Rock Auto online and had a quote for $125.00 to install. I left him a note to not touch car that afternoon, that we would be towing it. I called him at 7:30 am and he was ill and said I was not getting my vehicle until I paid $100.00 because he had dropped the fuel tank. We left our home immediately and drove to his shop where we discovered he had not dropped the fuel tank. We paid him the 100.00 and he began running his mouth at us. He called police, thank goodness, as they helped us get our vehicle out. In the meantime, he is using ratchet on our car. If anything is damaged, he will see us again in court. Beware!

Our transmission quit about a quarter mile from the shop during vacation. They were very helpful and had my transmission rebuilt in less than 24 hours, minimizing the impact on our vacation. A great experience. The building is unremarkable, but they really know their stuff and did a great job on our transmission.

I've been taking my cars to John as long as he's been in business here. He listens to me when I come in. He doesn't treat me (or my wife or children) like idiots because we may not know exactly what is wrong with our vehicles. He has been honest with us with his estimates, and has called us when he found things that weren't in his original estimate to make sure that we were ok with him proceeding. I trust him enough that I let my teenage daughter take her vehicle to him.Black Bear Transmission does great work at a reasonable price.

Im relatively new in town and needed some major work done on my Honda CRV. I was quoted prices from other businesses. Not only was I quoted a lower price but was met with honesty and compassion. My car is good as new. I have found a go to place to take my car for any work in the future. I couldnt ask for a better experience. Thanks guys!!!!!Service: Engine repair

Charged 389 for small brake Job, after keeping car for 3 days with no work done on it was going to pick up the car so all of a sudden could get it done in a few hours. Charged 15 fee for debt card use. That is greed!!

I stopped by to see if I could get an inspection. They don't do inspections. Asked if I could get some air in my tire that was getting low. The owner refused to and said' " He didn't have time unless he was fixing the tire." So much for helping a neighbor out.The Owner was extremely rude but the employee I talked to was pretty nice. This place is down the street from where I live but I would rather drive across town the come here.

Great service!! I knew I had some problems, with my car, but couldn't afford to fix everything at once. These guys were HONEST and told me what needed to be done today and what could wait. My car is running great and I will definitely be taking it back when I fix everything else!!!

I had the most amazing time at this establishment! If I could give the place a TRILLION STAR REVIEW, I would!!! The owner is the most honest, knowledgeable, and very kind. He possibly saved my life by fixing my car now I know when I take my children around town we are safe because John Mamph fixed my car right!

I regret ever going to anyone else. Not only is John fair, he's fast, efficient, and most importantly, great at what he does. He's worked on a couple of my vehicles and I have been pleased every time. He even stayed after hours for my brake job when I showed up 30 minutes before closing!

Took my car in and asked for my power steering to be fixed . He gave me a quote. Called fixed it that day and it was 1/2 as much as he had quoted. Seemed like an honest person. I will continue to take my vehicles there. He is moving his shop soon to Hwy 23/74 in Canton next to Napa Auto parts.

Please do yourself a favor and stay far away, they put a new transmission in and car made it 8 miles and they left a hole in Coolant hose and by the time the engine light came on it was too late, he denied it was his fault.. so I paid to have a new engine put ( myself not him) in car and transmission will not shift into high gear, after 5 trips taking car back for him to fix, he said it was my fault transmission doesn t shift ... so I m closing in on 6000 dollars spent and car still isn t drivable, he says it my fault it doesn t shift proper... so the car has to be towed from his shop!! 6000 dollars later it has to be towed from his shop... I now have taken it to advance transmission to have it fixed properly... please do yourself a favor and stay far far away from black bear transmission...Service: Transmission

Anyone considering this shop for car repairs should stay far away! We had a horrible experience with the owner, John Mamph and his wife Selena and took our business elsewhere as a result. My wife was actually physically threatened by the owner. Reading other reviews here I see that has happened before with female customers. Also see that the owner has a long history of treating customers and his community horribly.

Owner is incredibly rude and unprofessional. I came in for an oil change and he tried to strong arm me into a full transmission rebuild. My transmission is fine and another mechanic has confirmed that it is indeed fine. When I told the owner I was not interested he became very rude and hateful.

Very unprofessional. Lied multiple times about what parts they put in. Failed to put the seals in the rear end correctly which leaked out all the rear end fluid. The quality of the work was very poor. I wouldn t recommend them to anyone as they seem very shady and beat around the bush when working on someone else s car.
