I took my Stihl chainsaw to Big Valley Tractor on Newton Rd. in Stockton, CA for repair because it was not starting. The service person that helped me told me that it would be $80 to diagnose the problem although there were several signs in the service department stating that it was $75 to diagnose problems with equipment. I did not argue and paid him the $80.Several days later, the service person called me and told me that the carburetor had to be replaced, and it would cost $229 more to replace. I told him that I would come down and pick it up because the pricing was way out of line. When I got down to big Valley tractor and into the service department I asked the service person how much the carburetor cost and he told me it was $80. He also told me that since they had to remove the carburetor the service charge would be $100. I paid the $100 and took the saw out my pickup and removed the cover plate on it to inspect the carburetor. The carburetor has a plastic cover over it, which was lightly coated with dust and oil and had no fingerprints on it. I went back into the service department and had the service person accompany me out to my pickup. I showed him the carburetor cover without fingerprints on it and toldhim it's obvious that this carburetor has not been removed. I also informed him that when I was younger I used to blueprint carburetors for racing. He then told me that he and watched the mechanic remove the Carburetor and that he normally videotaped the repair but had forgotten to do so on this occasion. I would guess that Big Valley Tractor's labor costs must be skyrocketing if they have service writers out watching repairmen and videotaping them to make sure they do their work. It's either that or someone there is pretty dishonest.I went home and later that week I pulled the saw out and removed the cover and the carburetor. I sprayed out the carburetor thoroughly with carburetor cleaner and reinstalled it. This took approximately 10 minutes. I then tried to start the saw and it would not start. I then remove the cover and checked the spark plug and found that it was loose. I removed the spark plug checked it and it looked fine. I then replaced it and the saw started up just like it was new.I then called the service manager Bob Norton and informed him of the repair I did on the saw and the amount of time it took me. I also asked Bob what the cost was on the carburetor for my chainsaw and he looked it up and told me it was approximately $59, not $80. I requested a refund and he did refund me $25. After I received the refund I called Bob again and informed him that I wished a full refund of my money. Bob said he would check with the general manager and let me know. I did not hear back from Bob and I did not receive the rest of the refund.

I hired the service department to do a pre-purchase inspection on a used tractor I was buying from afar. Technician missed something major: clutch was almost completely out due to transmission leak. Normally you might not be able to tell in a routine inspection, but in this case it was so bad you could tell just by driving it... Obviously they skipped that step... Expensive inspection that ended up costing me a lot of money.
