The pictures are so much nicer than the reality. The hotel is truly fine - but the details are just not done well. The hotel is very charming however as an elite Hilton property it is simply not in good repair. I found the staff to be very unengaged when asking questions. There were bugs in the room (so I handled but was surprised). The breakfast menu excluded all fresh items - so oatmeal in a carton it was - and the coffee ran out. I wanted the hotel to be nicer in my mind - it just was not. The city of Selma itself is in such disrepair that perhaps higher ratings compare it to the rundown city itself.

Ok, some people have posted issues. Yes, it's an older hotel...... but... It's historic and absolutely Beautiful. When we arrived, it was late, and Ashley was very helpful and informative. We settled in our room and walked out in the courtyard. It was stunning. My panoramic pictures doesn't do it justice. The hotel does need a few cosmetic repairs but it is special. The staff was very nice and helpful. I would recommend the hotel to purchase a building next to them for small conferences and meetings. You do have a special hotel and it's historic. I would Market those areas and go after the groups. You can do it. Thank you all for our stay. Oh yes they are also in the Hilton group.Rooms: Spacious, clean, great atmosphere.Noteworthy details: Historical Hotel, Beautiful courtyard. Brick and hardwood floors. Beautiful Staircase. The Atmosphere in the hotel was awesome.

This was an horrible experience. When I got in the room it was too late and I was too tired to change rooms. Also, I clean my own room and use my own towels anyways, when I visit hotels. Their was no cable TV the whole week. I also went two days without internet, which had me backed up at work as a remote worker. The first thing I noticed when walking into the room was the stale smell. I went in the bathroom and there was a dried up towel hanging over the shower that had been used by someone. The toilet had hair inside and on the seat. There were also streaks from whoever used the toilet last. The shower had hair and also the sink. When I decided to leave early to catch up on my work, they would not refund me for the last day. It was either stay in those conditions or leave, So, I left without being refunded. I had to drive almost 5 hours to the office, which I do not work from. Then turn around and drive about 7 hours to get back home. I lost a lot of money dealing with them, when it was their fault. I wish I had more pictures, but I had cleaned up most of the issues. The only thing I liked about the hotel was the view from the porch of the river. Beware of this place, it is not what it seems with the pictures on the internet. I have stayed in Selma plenty of times, but this was the only visit I didn't enjoy.Rooms: My next door neighbor had the same complaints as I did when I talked to them.

The walls have something running down them. The windows in the courtyard look like about to fall out. The restaurant is closed, but not mentioned until you get there. The cable is half working but it has been like that fir a whikeDon't tell the ront desk about any issue they cannot help because management is not available evidently after 3:30pm. I know that because when calling the corporate help desk the lady there could not get a hold of management. Yet the corporate office cannot help you get into a different hotel without you being willing to pay 2 hotel stays. They are sorry about it but nothing we can do to help. Worthless.Rooms: Something running down the wallsSafety: Nope. No parking lot, just out in the street.Food & drinks: Nope, notice on any sites or apps but the restaurant is closed for a whole season.Noteworthy details: Refrigerator unplugged and wet inside, don't plug it back in. The cable and internet doesn't work in the rain ( pre the front desk every time it rains they work on it but nothing helps)

I m giving one star because the staff is polite, outside of that, my room has ants (I have video evidence), room has no telephone, no fridge, no microwave, no overhead light(s), someone else s hair all over one of the beds when I checked in, poor paint job rehab throughout the room & hotel aka don t believe the pics on the website, they are photographic lies. Still waiting for my refund.

I am giving 2 starts for lack of service. The room that I was given was not ready for occupancy. No coffee machine. Air conditioning was loud and blowing warm air during nighttime.I went to the front desk few times and there was no one available to help.At one point the restaurant staff was at front desk and cannot help me because she did it know what to do. The hotel was labeled Tribute Collection but it lacks service.

Highly disappointed!! I ve stayed at St. James several times but this time has ended it all for me. I booked online via my Hilton app but didn t arrive until after 10 that night. I checked in on the app and received a digital key. I got in the room and was shocked but because it was so late and I had to leave the next morning at 5 am I went to sleep. The next morning I told the girl at the front counter what my room looked like and she said that room is out of order and never should have been assigned to you. So long story short, I was promised a refund but instead I was charged extra and I never received the refund. I talked to the GM and she stated she would handle it and call me back but now 2 months later still no call and no refund. Charging $205.57 to the game I guess! They got me this time but no more, I will never stay there again!!!!

Amazing view for a very reasonable price. Breakfast was more of free snacks. The lady at the front desk is super kind and is a blast to talk to. She let me know that they had Military discount and I was able to save a few more bucks. The room i booked originally smelled like cigarettes but was changed into a better one for no extra cost for the inconvenience. The room was super clean and the bed and pillow is very comfortable. The shared porch is very charming and has tables and chairs to enjoy your breakfast with a beautiful view. The room is pretty spacious and has really good complimentary shampoo and conditioner. The free coffee in the room is not good. Still well worth the money.

First time visiting Selma, AL and I really loved the hotel and my room experience. This historic hotel is situated in downtown Selma, close to restaurants and the Edmund Pettus bridge which makes it a well located hotel. Loved the aesthetics kf the hotel as it is a historic national landmark I believe. Great views of the Alabama river! I think customer service overall lacked a bit. As a hotel guest, I would expect to be briefed on parking, breakfast and any hotel amenities as a new guest. However, housekeeping was really friendly and greeted me each time I saw them which made me feel welcomed! Definitely would stay here again even though I wanted more of a welcoming customer service experience.Rooms: Nice rooms, bathroom and shower are separate!Safety: Pretty safe from my experienceWalkability: Very close to restaurants, Edmund Pettus Bridge and located in downtown Selma!

The St. James Hotel is beautiful and it is nostalgic. The lighting in the rooms could be just a bit brighter yet. I think that it s not really annoying. The staff is excellent bravo. There are a few things that need to be adjusted but it is not going to drive you crazy so go there. Enjoy yourself in Alabama, enjoy the beauty of the dining area and the antiques which fold in very well giving it an eclectic atmosphere. Warm and inviting.Rooms: Cozy, really good mattresses, lovely old brass accents in bathroom, cleanNearby activities: Shopping is limited if you are from a bigger city, YET, there are some nice things to take back home with you. And don t forget to go to the library to Selma Public library. It s in walking distance. It is amazing. Ask for Becky Nichols and also churches, beautiful churches, historical churches, and a lot of beautiful homes in old town Selma. Remember there has been a tornado. I think I have pictures to show you if Google ask I will. Also go to the coffee shop I think there s only one and for Jackie.Safety: You are safe here.Walkability: YesFood & drinks: The food is good. Make sure you get spinach dip served with sea salt, warm toasted, thin delicious bread.Noteworthy details: There are balconies in this hotel, and they are on every floor. There is also a balcony where you can get a great view of the Alabama River and the Edmund Pettus bridge. Also other beautiful views . The hotel reminds me of some of the hotels in New Orleans as well some of the lovely homes in New Orleans.

Stayed in this hotel for 1 night on April 29-30. We picked a room with 2 queen beds, we were given full-sized. Upon check-in, there was no tissue in our room and no wash cloths. When I asked the front desk for wash cloths, I was told there were no clean ones and that they would notify housekeeping to bring me, someone, when they were ready. I never got them. The comfort on one of the beds had what appeared to be blood stains on it and one of the towels appeared to have feces on it. I have family in Selma and was unable to stay with them for this short trip, so we thought this historic location would be a nice stay. This was truly a disappointment.Nearby activities: Very short walk to the Edmund Pettus Bridge

I would not stay here again if it were free. All of the staff were so rude and crooks. The front desk clerk called our room at midnight and asked if we were in our room which was very strange. We walked downstairs to see why the front desk clerk was asking strange questions and we noticed our car was being broken into. Obviously, the front desk clerk was making sure we were in our room while he worked with others to break into our car. We grabbed our stuff and drove all the way home in the middle of the night. We made the manager aware of this situation the next day. They refunded our money and said "yeah, we figured our night clerk was up to no good." DO NOT STAY HERE. The area is really rough and run-down. If you do stay, make sure to bring a machine gun.Safety: Selma is so dangerous. I wouldn't stop in downtown Selma for $100.

We were there Friday-Sunday for the Chestnut/Rutledge wedding. There was a small issue with our first room (King Bed) and due to time constraints switched to a second room (Queen Bed). I thought this was going to be a downgrade until I saw the spectacular view and balcony access. The entire weekend, staff at the hotel were beyond accommodating and pleasant. The front desk, bar, and especially Anthony the General Manager made sure we had an excellent stay. I don't know why I would have to go back to Selma, but I know where I will stay when I do.

I just stayed at this hotel for my brother s wedding! The hotel had a few minor issues like lamps not working despite changing the light bulb and plugging it in and doors not locking right away. The staff was quick to respond and fix the issue. Other than the minor issues the rest of the stay was great. The bartenders worked so hard so the wedding party could continue celebrating. They were so kind to stay up late with us. The front desk and staff thoughout the hotel were so friendly and accommodating. I would happily stay here again. Thank you!!

Unfortunately there s no 1 star option. After making a reservation on Hilton Website on Oct 12, which was confirmed, when we arrived today they said the two rooms were not available and they did not not how we had been able to make the reservation. After I remarked our reservation was 2 months old, they claimed that a big group reserved 4 months ago and the rooms we reserved should not have been available to reserve when I made mine. They said they tried multiple times to get in touch with me, but they did it only today, while we were traveling. What I believe is that the large group did not male their reservation before us but simply arrived and requested more rooms and so they dumped ours.No offer to help us looking for another accommodation, no suggestions. Just an apology which after you let someone stranded on a business trip has the same value of used toilet paper. The lady at the desk continued to say that she didn t know how that could have happened. I have the answer: incompetence and lack of professionalism and ethic in your job.Very disappointed: unless forced by events I will never book an hilton again

A great historic hotel with a long history it's been around since the early 1800s. Some years ago it was restored by Hilton hotels. Some rooms have access to a balcony with a view along the Alabama River which was a great thing to wake up to in the morning. It's a bit pricey than most hotels in the area but the view was well worth it. So if you're staying in,Selma, Alabama I would recommend it.

I love the bar , music (when it's available) and the COURTYARD. There are concerns that I have and it's with the COURTYARD. I love sitting outside ; however there seems to be a very strong odor of gas. I have sat out in the COURTYARD a few times. reported it to the Aspire Gas company. AS I stated before I love the idea of having a space in the hotel to sit with a group! Finally have someone take all of those dead and dry leaves off the plants. I will be back again soon Rooms: Beds are too small. Up grade your selection of linen .Safety: Check previous message about Court yard.!.I RETURN TO Selma pretty often because it is home. GLAD you have a hotel close to the famous bridge. . There are so many things you could do to bring in revenue to the hotel .2 Selma policeman on duty 24 hrs.The bar could make more money every nite if u have something happening. Extending bar hours to midnight!

We had such an amazing stay at the St James Hotel this week that our one night turned into two! The staff's professionalism and sincere kindness was a breath of fresh air that truly made our trip deeply meaningful. The cleanliness of the rooms was impressive and I'm especially picky since the pandemic began! We ate at the restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food was delicious andthe staff was excellent. We would highly recommend this hotel to business travelers as well as families. Loved the books in the lobby and on each floor!!! What a special surprise.

Love this hidden gem. First time staying at the St. James and I was very impressed. I will be staying there again whenever I visit Selma. The room was very spacious and everything was clean. I never had a closet that big in a hotel room and was surprised by that. I had a corner room and it was very quiet and had a view of the river and bridge, an added bonus. You won't be disappointed if you decide to stay here. There is ample parking right in front of the building.

Probably the best hotel in Selma. The rooms, while not super roomy, were clean & had nice decor. In our room (1 king), there s a pocket door to the bathroom with a tub shower. My favorite is the courtyard in the center of the hotel & the balcony with a view of the Edmund Pettus bridge. There are chairs & a bistro table on the balcony to enjoy the view. There s a Keurig, a safe, but no mini fridge or microwave. As of this writing (Sept 2022) the restaurant inside is only bar food (wings, dips, a cheeseburger) & only a continental breakfast. The staff (very nice) said a full menu is in the works so if that s important to you, I would ask on the status. We stayed on a Fri night & I couldn t hear inside or outside noises. Hope this is helpful.

Great location and great staff. We love historical hotels and this one did not disappoint. They modern updates to the rooms are well done and the middle courtyard is nicely done, along with the outside courtyard area along the bank of the river. There were just a couple of things that are so small, I won t even mention them overall it was a great experience that I would recommend.

This was beyond mediocre. I honestly can t believe that Hilton actually put their name on this hotel. All you get is a nice view of the bridge that s it. Let s start with the entrance. Once you arrive the front desk agent is outside taking a smoke break every 2 minutes it seems. No matter how many times you come down, she is always outside smoking. Moving into the kitchen/bar area. The tables are not sturdy AT ALL. They are very NASTY. They say they are cleaned, but if cleaned properly those stains wouldn t be there. The night shift bartender is super sweet. However, the food and drinks are trash. I was in utter disbelief. All the remodeling must went to the entrance of downstairs. The elevator sucks! The rooms are so basic, and you can very much tell they are very old. They could ve done so much better. No refrigerator or microwave in the rooms. He balconies could ve at least been PRIVATE, they aren t. Sucks having to listen/watch someone be intimate outside YOUR window. I was beyond unimpressed and disappointed. For $200 I could ve went elsewhere! Small bed with no couch or anything. I do not recommend, and will NEVERstay here again!

Very charming hotel with super nice staff. It's a Historic Hotel but they did a good job of making it feel modern. It's very clean and the towels were super nice. The restaurant had a surprisingly good menu and fair prices. The wine and burger were great.

Street side rooms can be noisy. My room (208) was very spacious and comfortable. The light switch by the door does nothing. The room is dark (only two lamps by the bed for the whole room. That made it hard to get work done. Co-workers had rooms on the river side and the view from their balcony was amazing. The "continental" breakfast was by far the worst that I have seen from any hotel. Warm fried eggs and crispy bacon were the main options. A few bagels, mixed fruit and about 8-10 orange juice cartons. Didn't have silverware or plates for a while then bought out a few bowls and a handful of silverware when asked, two days in a row now. No toaster for bagels. Did bring out a plate of toast after another person complained. I heard that the coffee was very weak (I do not drink it). Two more nights here for business so please try to get this fixed by then. Thanks

I didn't say at the hotel this past time! I only visited to eat and have some drinks! The 2 Lady Chefs and Bartenders did an exceptional job! The food was so good I had the Steak Frites & Alaskan Salmon and they cooked it perfectly! I really would like to applaud the young lady Jessica! She was very overwhelmed because she was at the bar and running the floor all by herself this particular night I visited but did her job with a smile and professionalism even though I saw some customers being rude! I salute these ladies for representing this Hilton Hotel!! I will be back again!! The dessert was excellent as well!

I had a wonderful visit, the St. James was a very pleasant surprise. I came to see the bridge and Selma and had originally booked another motel, the moment I found the St. James I canceled and booked there. The service on the phone from Hilton was excellent in making the booking. I look forward to coming back. Great blend of a historic hotel, that has retained its character, modern updates where it matters and the excellent Hilton service and support.

We initially booked a room at the Hampton Inn in Selma, but they screwed up our reservation, but it ended up being a blessing in disguise! Shondra was the beautiful face we met in the lobby. She was awesome! We got 2 rooms for less than the 1 room we originally booked at the other hotel. On top of that, the rooms were so great! The atrium was beautiful, but the balcony over looking the river was spectacular. She also told us the incredible story of the 1st African American to ever manage a hotel and how he convinced confederate soldiers to not burn the hotel. It was built in 1837! Amazing! Also, it has a crazy love story surrounding Jesse James and his mistress. I loved everything about this hotel, but Shondra truly made it an experience I ll never forget. I highly recommend!
